Stevia

STEVIA (Stevia rebaudiana) – loose leaf herb – herbal sweetener

SteviaT ‘n’ T Teas is a company run by qualified herbalists and natural therapists (and author of a forthcoming book on the subject of therapeutic herbs), using traditional remedies that have been handed down through the generations.

This offer is for a single herb ingredient, but contact us for a personalised consultation for herbal ingredient mixes that are tailored to your requirements. Contact us on our website, or through the eBay/Amazon messages.

Stevia is about 100 to 300 times sweeter than table sugar but has no carbohydrates, calories, or artificial ingredients.

Traditional therapeutic use

  • Diabetes.
  • Weight control.
  • Reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer.
  • Stevia extracts have been found to dilate blood vessels. They can also increase sodium excretion and urine output, therefore a useful ingredient against high blood pressure and regulate the heartbeat.
  • Children’s sweet tooth!
  • Anti-allergenic.

There are no stevia ‘teas’ as this is used like sugar to sweeten drinks or food. Stevia comes in a white powdered form under a number of brand names, but pure stevia is a leaf that will give up its sweet secret when immersed in water. To use it instead of sugar in cakes and cookies, make sugar water first and use this in your baking. For your tea or coffee, why not put it into a tea bag and let the flavour come out?

Possible side effects & interactions

There may be issues about its effects on blood sugar levels and their effects on the reproductive organs, cardiovascular (cardiovascular) and kidney systems. Too little research is available on this.

Stevia can cause lower blood pressure, which can affect certain anti-hypertensive medicines, so people taking such medicines should be aware of this.

The use of stevia requires caution if the patient is taking a medicine that may lower blood sugar. It is recommended that people with diabetes and taking oral insulin or other medicines for diabetes be supervised by a qualified healthcare professional.

People with sensitivity to sugar alcohol may experience bloating, abdominal cramps, nausea, and diarrhoea.

Our plants are harvested during particular seasons, times of the day and according to the lunar calendar to ensure the plants or parts of it have the highest nutritional value. For example, roots are picked on a waning moon. Once harvested, they are packaged by hand because we try to avoid using metal equipment and utensils that could reduce the beneficial properties of the plant.

Because these products do contain active ingredients, please ensure that you do not exceed the recommended doses and if in any doubt, or if you experience any side effects – however slight – please consult your doctor or healthcare professional.
